Three comedians, three very different ways of seeing the world. Comedy Heights is back at Lestat’s this Friday and Saturday, October 16 and 17, and this weekend’s lineup comes with a pretty unusual collection of life experience.

Tavaris Smith comes out of Milwaukee and now lives in Los Angeles. He’s known for a smooth radio voice, Midwest charm and smart comedy that doesn’t avoid uncomfortable subjects. Tavaris has performed around the country and can be seen on Laugh After Dark on Amazon Prime. His bio also describes him as “as clever as he is bald,” so clearly the man has accepted what nature gave him.

Matt Coffern pulls material from growing up in a small West Texas town, working for a defense contractor and his experiences living with autism. He mixes personal stories with quick joke writing and crowd interaction, while keeping his comedy clean and honest. Matt has performed throughout California, at the Hollywood Improv Lab and at Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club in Las Vegas as part of the Kenan Presents Comedy Festival.

Then there’s Los Angeles native Franklin Yi, whose observational comedy comes with what his bio calls a cartoon sounding voice and his own experience of growing up feeling like the black sheep among other Asians. These days, he has decided to embrace being a “bad Asian” and make jokes about it instead.

Mark Kraus and Al Gavi round out both nights.

There is no obvious reason these five people should all be standing in the same room with a microphone.

Which is one of the reasons stand up comedy works.
