Comedy Heights had one of those weekends where the lineup could go in almost any direction. Tommy Savitt brought more than 20 years of stand up experience to Lestat’s, and it showed. He knows how to work a room, when to lean into a bit and when to get out before the audience catches up. Margaret Star’s mix of stand up and musical comedy set the table for Tommy perfectly. An opera trained soprano singing about the messier parts of life is already a pretty good setup. Margaret knows how to make the contrast pay off. The Laugh Pac and Al Gavi rounded out the weekend and kept the shows moving with their own voices and styles.
Then Saturday night brought rain. San Diego rain is always entertaining because half the city reacts like we’ve been hit by a hurricane. The people who made it to Lestat’s anyway were rewarded with a full night of comedy and the satisfaction of surviving several drops of water. That counts as commitment around here.
Thanks to Tommy Savitt, Margaret Star, The Laugh Pac and Al Gavi, and to everyone who came out Friday and Saturday.
The jokes were dry. Saturday night was not.
